Manual Handling Training

Approximately 40% of all serious claims were a direct result of a manual handling injury;

The predominant manual handling injuries were back, hand, shoulder and knees, which accounted for approximately 52% of all serious injuries – “Key Work Health and Safety Statistics, Australia 2015”

Every year in New South Wales, approximately 17,000 people are seriously injured or suffer from illness related to manual handling – “WorkCover NSW 2012″.

Is your organisation managing their manual handling risks?

It’s imperative to manage your manual handling risks within your organisation which is done effectively through the right type of training. Over the past 12 years we have delivered numerous manual handing training sessions for a diverse range of organisations throughout Victoria and Southern NSW. Have you ever asked whether classroom or computer based training actually causes behavioural and cultural change?

Our experience has demonstrated that if we are serious about reducing injuries in the workplace, we must empower staff to take ownership of their own health, safety and well-being by modelling and reiterating the importance of sound manual handling techniques in the workplace and at home. To this end, organisations require staff to understand the potential impacts to themselves, their families, colleagues and the employer in the event that an injury occurs, so that they comprehend these multi-dimensional impacts. To achieve this a combination of theoretical and practical training is required to “bed down” the learning outcomes.

Click on the bullet points below to reveal how Employer Health Solutions provides the perfect manual handling training package to bring about behavioural change.

1. Manual Handling Classroom Based Training – The Theory

Our classroom based training is delivered by an experience Occupational Therapist aimed at providing the theory behind body mechanics and its relationship with the environment within the workplace and at home. Employer Health Solutions provides an overview of manual handling impacts, review of anatomy and physiology of the body and the application of basic techniques to lift and move items in a safe manner. The course is tailored specific to the risks of your business with real photographic hazards reviewed in the workplace addressed during the training.

For ease of delivery and to mitigate lost productivity of your business, our sessions run for approximately two hours at your premises and each participant receives a certificate of attendance. This course is appropriate for all industry types and meets legislative safety requirements. The training is best suited to groups of 10 to 15 people.

2. Manual Handling Practical Based Training – The Practice

Training will be delivered in the employee’s work space, in small groups of two to three, with the aim to solidify the manual handling training principles, taught in the classroom training, so that a “think safety first” culture starts to resonate within each individual team member. The long term objective is that our training becomes part of the culture of the organisation through coaching your team in best manual handling practice and assisting them to solve issues raised in relation to manual handling in the workplace.  The overall goal is to eliminate and/or reduce the likelihood of incidents from occurring as far as practicable with the ultimate goal of zero manual handling incidents.

3. Ongoing Random Functional Training – The Culture Change

Employer Health Solutions will return to your workplace at agreed upon intervals to ensure the training provided is woven into the fabric of your organisation to enable cultural change to occur. It’s imperative that reinforcement occurs to maximise this cultural change and to mitigate manual handling injuries in your workplace.
